It Could Have Been Worse; Walter and The Dude Avoid the ER
Other than a bike flat tire, for 25 days and 1350 miles, Dave and I have enjoyed mishap-free travel. Until yesterday. Walter, our erstwhile 29 year-old motorhome, was involved in a scuffle which could have been much worse. Long story short, while on Texas Hwy 90 between Comstock and Del Rio, Dave and Walter were literally run off the road and into a guardrail. A rogue trucker, trying to pass another, left no room for Dave. Into the guardrail Walter went. The Dude was still letting loose a litany of choice F bombs when I finally caught up with him and surveyed the damage. Other than a sheared off storage door and front step, and damage to the main entry, Walter is OK. While never a beauty to begin with, the RV's new dings will only add to its warrior image. The accident is testimony to The Dude's driving ability. Imagine a large truck barreling straight at you at 70 mph. It's either a head-on collision or guardrail crash. Again, it could have been much worse. After the near-miss yesterday, we called it a day following 48 miles at a camp site near Lake Amistad. Today is our first rest day since hitting the road on May 1. We're camped at the Hidden Valley RV Camp in Del Rio where the gracious owners, David and Janet Casey (shown above with Dave), are donating the cost of one night to our Warriors Heart trip. The generosity of people continues to amaze. The rest day is well earned, if I may say so myself. The headwind continues to cause havoc and suddenly the humidity is spiking with a temp forecast of 106 tomorrow as we saddle up and head to Bracketville Oh, the joys and splendor of riding a bicycle through West Texas in late May. Happy Memorial Day weekend, y'all!
